The Grammar of Casting
"The cosmology is locked. The spells, at last, have a grammar."
Magic in Arcanea is not chaos. Every working — from an Apprentice's first ember to a Luminor's covenant of dawn — sits at a precise place in a single, knowable system. Learn the grammar and you can read any spell ever cast, and write your own.
A spell is classified on four axes.
1. Element
The five elements, as the Canon locks them: Fire transforms, Water remembers, Earth endures, Wind connects, and the fifth divides into Void (Nero's unformed potential) and Spirit (Lumina's transcendence). Every spell channels one of these six.
2. Discipline
Three branches name what a spell does:
- Attack (Angriffsmagie, Evocation) — force shaped into a strike.
- Defense (Verteidigungsmagie, Abjuration) — wards that turn aside harm, and the restoration that mends it. Healing lives here.
- Summoning (Beschwörungsmagie, Conjuration) — the name-binding that calls familiars, constructs, and echoes into the world.
They form a triangle: Defense abjures Attack; Attack disrupts Summoning; Summoning outlasts Defense — each modulated by tier and elemental affinity.
3. Tier
Seven tiers measure a spell's power and sanctity, low to high:
| Tier | (German) | Gate | Rank | |---|---|---|---| | Light | leichte | 1–2 | Apprentice | | Advanced | fortgeschritten | 3–4 | Mage | | Greater | schwere | 5–6 | Master | | Sacred | heilige | 7 | Archmage | | Royal | königliche | 8 | Archmage | | Imperial | kaiserliche | 9 | Luminor | | Divine | göttliche | 10 | Luminor |
4. Gating
A caster cannot wield what their Gates cannot hold. The tier fixes the Gate a caster must have opened and the Rank they will have reached to open it. Sacred workings and above are spoken through the Gate itself — "Per Portam Septimam…", through the Seventh Gate — and the highest may name a Guardian as witness, never as the one who casts.
The living index of every classified spell is the Grimoire. This text is its foundation; the Grimoire is its library.
